Rewind...
hello home slice_

The lure of impromptu week-night boozing is irresistible these days. Mid-week art exhibitions and spontaneous parties have always been an Adelaide institution for the close-to-the-city-dweller. At Home Slice we think its time to say goodbye to school night sanction taboo and when you live 2 blocks from the scene it’s a no brainer. Think of the city as an extension of your living room and its vast entertaining night-time happenings as your TV. Stop watching Big Bro and whatever other reality TV shit fight the commercial stations are ramming down your neck disguised as entertainment and get off your butt and see what this city has to offer. Inner city pressure?

Bliss cupcakes!

Cupcakes or fairy cakes for our British friends are so called because they are the appropriate size for diminutive fairys to share (wiki trivia!). But I’m no fairy and I love them, the way you can cradle them in one hand, the pretty little shape, the way they taste, they are gorgeous! Aw!

Bliss Cupcakes is a new Adelaide venture by young entrepreneur Jess Moschetti. But don’t let the E word scare you, they are made from the finest local biodynamic & free range ingredients, with no artificial colours and flavours. They even come in mini sizes. Gorgeous! Aw! Perfect for impromptu tea parties or big events. We challenge you to look at the photos and not have saliva running down your chin.

The Revelation of Town
An exhibition by Chris and Kara Town

Bold colours and gracefully sinuous line-work all toying with religious motifs characterise the brilliant work of Chris and Kara Town. They draw influence from each other and their diverse art interests - Mike Giant’s tattoo work and traditional print techniques among them. All wrapped in the Town’s customary kitsch, the art of this family duo is up at A Room of Her Own during June and July.

Come along for the opening on Saturday June 14, 6-8pm, drinks provided.

5 Elizabeth st (Queen st precinct), Croydon

GRENADIERS
Demo (Independent)

The first time I saw local four-piece Grenadiers play live, I was drunk on home-distilled whiskey and the white hot rock ‘n’ roll on display scorched itself into my brain the same way the spirits burned my throat. Since then I’ve seen the band play several times while I’ve been sober and they have continued to rock my face off – they even covered The Stooges’ I Wanna Be Your Dog and didn’t sound entirely prepubescent in comparison to the original, and that’s a big ask.

This four song demo (available for free at their live shows) does a pretty good job of getting their sound on tape. Transmissions kicks things off, and there’s a slight country influence buried under the distorted riffs and rolling drums. But although Good Advice also namechecks Johnny Cash, the band’s aggressive, uncompromising rock sounds more like The Bronx. There are restrained moments, though: Leave It In Your Pocket offers raucously stomping verses but incorporates a more subdued, melodic chorus – it’s pretty much the polar opposite of the confrontational Oh, Learned One!’s hostile refrain, “fuck your anecdotes”. But it’s Good Advice that’s the prime cut here, its visceral fist-pumpin’ riffs and fiery attitude coalescing into pure, irresistible adrenaline.

As far as I’m concerned, Grenadiers – alongside God God Dammit Dammit and SA Waste – are one of the most vital bands currently performing in Adelaide, and hopefully this demo will be just the first of many recordings from them.

Nouns by No Age
(Sub-Pop)

On Nouns, LA duo Randy Randall and Dean Spunt have successfully created a sound derivative of a seminal era, but still completely their own. Where bands like Blood On The Wall have made commendable records drawing on a similar influence, the end result has ultimately lacked exclusivity. Dominantly Nouns is reminiscent of late eighties Dinosaur Jr, totally rocking and irreverent.

The most pleasing aspect of this album, is the manner in which it works AS AN ALBUM. Individual tracks stand beautifully on their own, but when put into context they shine much brighter. Billowing two-minute pop songs are soothed by moments of introspective contemplation. Some people will label tracks like Impossible Banquet and Keechie as filler, but they turn what would be a thirty-minute mess of fuzzy guitar and drums into a structured released.

Developing their sound from the abstract predecessor Weirdo Rippers, Nouns has transformed No Age into a raucous and sophisticated art-punk force.

featured artist: NICKAS

Nickas hails from Adelaide, South Australia where as a child she amused herself by keeping cages full of snails, climbing trees, making things out of paper and junk she found on the ground, and primarily, drawing. This tendency grew over time into a nice healthy obsession. Nickas gets quite grumpy if she doesn’t draw daily. Nickas mostly draws, paints and builds things, although she has been known to create the occasional animated short or TVC.

My name is Lisa King and I am an artist, a designer and a craftslady! My world is a wonderland full of color, contrast and pretty pictures and am totally addicted to it. There is no escaping my artistic journey...i live it, breathe it, sleep with it and most importantly CREATE it. My first artistic experiences derived from a young girl when me and my father drew pages of scribbles and then found pictures within and built stories beyond. My drive comes from the addiction of the drug L.H.S.C.S " Lisa's Hyper State of Creative Satisfaction". This high, this feeling, this overwhelming mood can only be explained by the chemical gratification to the joy of the making and the creating man! I am an artist, a designer and a craftslady and my name is Lisa King!
