The last time I saw The Mime Set play, they were poised on an inner-city rooftop, amid the bright Melbourne skyline. Starting ominously as clouds gathered, they fought against the impending storm. Even when the rain began to fall, they barely flinched, staff erected umbrellas in a hasty attempt to prevent electrocution. Soaking in the downpour, the crowd remained tied to their set, captured by the power of The Mime Set’s twin-guitar attack, hypnotised by their dreamy physical rhythms. When they finally left the stage, we sat trapped in the rain, not sure how to return to ordinary life below.
