Keen..
hello home slice_

As of today, the cold winter months are now behind us, so no more fat suit excuses for not getting out and enjoying all that Adelaide has to offer. Urban Yo Yo season is in full flight, plenty of local artists are exhibiting their talents, and we hear a rumour that underground parties are on their way. There's also a healthy dose of street art popping up; from local talent Ankle and his army of commander keens, to an import wall by the Everfresh boys. Personally, I have no idea why a bunch of Melbourne lads were allowed to paint our most prime street art wall... but that's a rant for another space. Adelaide has bucketloads of talent and we need to get out there and support it.

Social Change @ Crown & Sceptre

Adelaide hip hop is a cut above the rest, and these guys are no exception. Personally I think it can be attributed to SA's non-convict heritage forming a supreme grasp of English linguistics that gives SA hip hop its edge. Or it could be because our beer tastes better... What ever it is, its working, because Social Change are well on the way to being Adelaide's next hip hop sensation. Go check out some real hip hop at the Sceptre with a massive lineup of local talent featuring; Common Cause, Headstrong Company, K21 and Afore Mentioned, with door prizes and open-mic freestyle cyphers.

They've invited the equally legendary Shoji Hano, (free jazz/improv/noise drummer of choice for many, many great ensembles) for a run of Aussie shows.

Mint Vintage does ebay

Mint Vintage is moving online. All of it. No more grotty love filled little Mint Vintage the shop. I know, devastating right? It's been almost four years and it's made a big impact on Adelaide's fashion scene but it's time for Holly to move on.

There are MV devotees a plenty but FEAR NOT, ADELAIDE, she's been flogging vintage on Ebay for years so have a look at her pretty shop and keep an eye on it as it grows into a lovely adolescent.

Rent a Dog

Sitting huddled together on a cold winters night my girlfriend and I longed for a canine companion, however we both knew very well that it's impossible. Landlords don't like them and apparently dogs live longer than one night, about the length of time we could realistically commit.

"Maybe we could dognap 'Jock' from next door?", I asked in reference to the neighbours cute Kelpie mongrel, the one that barks a little too much a little too early. "No I don't think they'd like that", she replied. "Hmmm", I pondered, "Maybe we could rent-a-dog?". Both our eyes lit up and we jumped on google pronto, excited at the prospect of further proof that the world is bananas.

YES YOU CAN! In Japan, Hong Kong and the US of A (naturally) dogs like 'Jackpot' the labrador and 'Pirate' the Boston terrier (I think these dogs must have named themselves) are prostituting themselves on the internet, even with leud photographs in their portfolios like sticking out there tongues and striking all kinds of risque' poses. These poor poochs probably have the self esteem akin to a child whose single mother or father rotates partners weekly. Poor kids, poor pooches, but now you know.

For a funny web discussion full of 'experts' and future Paris Hiltons, check this out.

Sea Lion by The Ruby Suns
(Sub-Pop Records/Lil’ Chief Records)

The music business isn’t fair. That’s no bombshell by any means, but sometimes it just strikes you more than others.

Vampire Weekend are riding a humongous wave of hype right now amidst their afro-pop gimmick. Similarly, Seattle folksters Fleet Foxes and Brooklyn’s Grizzly Bear have busied many a young blogger with their rich melodies. And with the success of Flight of the Conchords, could New Zealanders really be any cooler right now?

So by my calculations: New Zealand band plus leg slapping tribal beats multiplied by harmonies that would make Brian Wilson blush = rulers of the world! Nuh-uh.

The Ruby Suns’ sophomore effort Sea Lion is the brainchild of our Trans-Tasman neighbour Ryan McPhun together with associates Amee Robinson and Imogen Taylor. It incorporates all of the above mentioned attributes, and even some really pretty cover art! Yet despite some wide-ranging attention, The Ruby Suns haven’t had anywhere near the success of their American cousins.

‘Sea Lion’ is an amazing pop journey. Haters have said this album lacks consistency and has no direction. You can only feel sorry for people that won’t open their mind to let The Ruby Sun’s beautifully textured sounds in. Consistent it is not, but when was that ever the definitive mark of a great band?

This album is always engaging, diverse and above all completely loveable. From the dream pop of There Are Birds to the campfire sing-a-long Oh Mojave to the stunning closer Morning Sun, unpredictable pop gems litter ‘Sea Lion’ from start to finish.

Some young punks

Friday nights spent walking the aisles of your local bottle-o trying to find something new can be quite fun. But, when you're in a rush, a hot vino tip from a friend can be quite handy.

Next time you're at a loose-end give the gear from Some Young Punks a go; fun labels, quirky names, great tasting wine.

We'd recommend 'The Squids Fist'. Its a Sangiovese Shiraz which in our humble opinion would compliment a good strong pasta with some pals.

But don't take our word for it, check out their website and have a look over their range of wine.

Gilles Street Market

We went to the first Gilles Street Market months ago and were pretty impressed with the selection of vintage, fresh and quality clearance clothes.

It was a pretty neat setup then, but a couple of weeks ago we returned for a second look and were blown away.

Not only were there almost double the stalls, but a massive new range of clothes, live DJ's and so much delicious food. The range of organic soup, yiros, vegetarian pastries, cakes and fair trade coffee was enough to be a mini-food market of its own. Perfect for keeping your energy levels up as you dig through the clothes.

Oh and look out for the hot little stall on the North West corner, a little birdy tells me its the pick of the bunch.

When: Sunday 21st September 10am-4pm
Where: Gilles Street Primary School, 91 Gilles Street, City (just off Pultney Street)

Radio National

When I was little my parents listened to a radio station that seemed to broadcast more static than music. This often angered me as I found such noise a terrible imposition on my calmness of mind. I’ve since discovered, however, that this interference was attributable to us having lived in the country and that the voices my parents strained so diligently to hear, regularly impart interesting news items and contemporary wisdom to the whole of Australia. Once detested, now revered: Radio National, how I’ve fallen for thee. Broadcasting to the widest cross-section of the Australian community, and programming accordingly, within a relatively short period of time I’ve come to acquire a deceptively comprehensive knowledge about all manner of things. Why just yesterday I took in Bush Telegraph, the Book Reading and my personal favourite, The Spirit of Things. The latter is hosted by Rachel Kohn, whose rather otherworldly voice intensifies the mystery of spiritual issues to which she refers. Memorable episodes include low downs on those kooky Moonie characters and modern day Shamans who take hallucinogens in order to discover great spiritual truths. Yesterday Rachel presented on the existentialist issues that become acute with the coming of old age, and relayed the names of services that assist people in realising the meaning of life. Wow.

The Spirit of Things is broadcast on Sunday nights at 6pm.
