Oh Ankle. :)
hello home slice_

while many of you were off swimming in your underpants in newcastle for TINA, some of us stayed behind to man the fort. but don't feel bad for us, there's plenty to do while we waited for your drunken call.. its okay, weren't staring at public phone boxes waiting them to ring or nothin'..

in other news, there's a new kid in town.. a hipster, with a name that rhymes with George Townshend. still can't guess? (although you must at least be a little impressed with my wonderful language skills). well fine, i'll spell it out for you.. its fivethousand.

here's hoping that the new kid stirs up some friendly fire between themselves and home grown heroes merge magazine and ripitup. because a little sporting competition never hurt anyone right?

scroll down to cult for the lowdown on fivethousand, its new head honcho and why you should subscribe. maybe.

there'll be music supplied by that lovable band The Torrens, plus one of those fashion parade thingies to show off their goods.

Where: Urban Cow, 11 Frome Street.

21 Nights in July:
The Physics & Metaphysics of Cycling

Dr Ianto Ware is a strange, lovely, awkward creature. He co-founded the amazing Adelaide zine festival, is director of the DIY arts Format Festival and reached super massive fame and fortune with some popular music band that the kids like.

But all these achievements don't really describe the good doctor. They are merely his unconscious flirtations with life. But buy Ianto a mid-strength shandy and the truth comes in two round wheels. Yes, that's right, Dr Ianto Ware has a sick, terminal, addiction to cycling.

His specialist recommended documenting his dependence, so he may become aware of its severity. But rather than stem its growth, it seems to have spawned a love child. A book titled 21 Nights in July: The Physics & Metaphysics of Cycling.

Buy it so Ianto may seek better medical help for his chafing of the brain, but for fucks sake, do not read it.

Moon

I've been hanging to see this film for 0.70873 years (roughly the same time taken to get from earth to mars for the nerds playing at home). Its got everything I love in a film: a dash of science, space, a computer that talks and a healthy dose of psychological mind fuck.

My lovely friend Jess sent me the link to the trailer, and since then I think I've watched it a dozen times. The story is great, we run out of fuel on earth, so we send a mission to mine the crap out of the moon. Only, we just send one person.. on a three year mission.. with nothing but a computer to keep him company and a few pre-recorded family videos.

I loved 2001, liked fight club, so its a bit of a no-brainer for me. You'll bring the popcorn?

When: Thursday October 8th.
Where: PalaceNova, Rundle St, city.

ps_ Jess doesn't suggest human centipede!

Vampire Weekend
HORCHATA

Horchata is the name for several kinds of traditional beverages, made of ground almonds, sesame seeds, rice, barley or tigernuts (chufas).

Apparently it sounds quite nice too. See for yourself in this little album taste test from Vampire Weekend.

Music for Insomnia

Asthmatic Kitty Records

Music is a beautiful language that I often use to converse with my mind, while my mind is busy doing other things. It keeps me company when everyone else is asleep, or just not there. It also slows my racing mind, when I can't slow it myself.

Throughout my recent train travels across the US, Spain, Italy and Japan, Sufjan and The National were my closest friends. They talked to me and commented on the old fat couple opposite me, keeping me awake with their snoring.

So I was just a little bit excited to hear that Sufjan and Bryce from The National have helped out Sufjan's step dad Lowell produce an instrumental album. Have a listen, and let me know what you think.

its tough being the new kid in town, trying to find your way around, make friends, dig out the fun places to hang out. lucky for fivethousand, they don't have to worry about any of that. they're already locals.

that's right, I'm proud to tell you that the head editor of home slice, mister Dan Gladys, has been head hunted by right angle studio and thrust to the helm of the fivethousand monolith.

Dan is a lovely guy, a great writer, skateboarder and I think he'll do a bang-up job of editing and steering fivethousand to many thrilling adventures.

they're planning on publishing their email zine once a week.. much like merge's new e-offerings. so it'll be nice to see the battle royale unfold for the local latest & greatest, and which side adelaide's writers and creators are going to take. (though I'm sure some slutty bitches will play both sides, cough, me? never, cough).

so, the $99 million dollar question: now that its just me here all alone in the dark, where does this leave home slice? stay tuned next month for the exciting conclusion...
